Summer Camp

Summer Camp is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for Scouts of all Ranks. Scouts can get a broad range of experience at Camp that they can get nowhere else. It strengthens Troop leadership, and leadership abilities among all Scouts. There are dozens of opportunities to work on Requirements for Rank and Merit Badges, and on top of all that, Summer Camp is a huge amount of fun. All Scouts in Troop 397 should consider going to Summer Camp.

Baden-Powell and Dan Beard Camps

Baden-Powell and Dan Beard are one-week Boy Scout day camps located at Camp Belzer on the northeast side of Indianapolis.

Dan Beard camp is for scouts who want to work on their Tenderfoot, Second Class and First Class requirements, along with Firecrafter Camper and First Aid Merit Badge.

Baden-Powell camp is for scouts who want to work on merit badges. Scouts typically work on their requirements in the morning, then have lunch and go swimming before continuing work on their activities in the afternoon.

Registration for these camps takes place early in the year. Scouts in Troop 397 are responsible for their own registration for this camp. This is done through the council, not the troop.

Camp Ransburg 2010:

  • Place: Ransburg Scout Reservation
  • Dates: 27 June through 3 July 2010
  • Campsite: Beachcomber Upper

Camp Ransburg is an overnight scout camp program for all Boy Scouts. Ransburg Scout Reservation is located near Bloomington on Lake Monroe.

Troop 397 is going to Camp Ransburg on Sunday, June 27th and returning on Saturday, July 3rd. To attend Summer Camp this year, follow these easy steps:

1. If you haven't received a copy in the mail, download and read the Summer Camp Flyer. If you have any questions about Summer Camp, see Mr. Daly at any Troop Meeting, or email your questions to him.

2. Get your $110 deposit to Mr. Daly on or before March 4th.

This $110 deposit is the first half of the $215 total Ransburg Summer Camp fee. Scout Dollars may be used to pay for Camp. Paying your deposit is how you state your intention to go to Camp Ransburg.

3. Pay the remaining $105 of the Ransburg Summer Camp fee at or before the April 29th Troop Meeting.

The day after the Troop Meeting, fees will be sent to the Council to pay the Troop's Camp Fee. Missing this deadline means we lose the early-bird discount - this deadline must be met.

Make checks payable to Troop 397.

4. Assemble your paperwork.

Paperwork is due on or before the May 27th Troop Meeting. Do not procrastinate.

All campers are required to fill out:

  • The permission slip
  • A Crossroads of America Council Annual Health and Medical Record Form: All Scouts and adults going to Camp must submit a complete Medical Health and Record Form, which requires a physical examination for a full-week camping trip. Please don't put this off - make the appointment for your physical today! The Medical Form is not valid unless signed and dated by your Physician. Remember to include a copy of your insurance card with the Medical Form.
  • Activity Schedule: The time to start thinking about which Activities you want to sign up for is now. Activities and prerequisites must be approved by the Scoutmaster. The sooner you decide on Activities and work to secure prerequisites, the better your chances of being able to participate in the Activities you choose. Prerequisites are listed on the Activity Schedule and must be signed off by a Merit Badge Counselor, not a parent. New Scouts are strongly encouraged to sign up for Eagle Quest, as this is a great opportunity to knock out many of the Requirements for Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class Scout Rank.
  • Workership Application: Each year, partial Scout Camp fees are awarded to Scouts who wish to go to Camp but are unable to pay. The money is given in return for some form of service to the Troop's Chartered Organization. If you are interested in the Workership program, consult the Scoutmaster.

If you have any dietary restrictions or special needs, Camp Ransburg must know them at least 2 weeks prior to arrival at camp. Let Mr. Daly know about these restrictions when you turn in your paperwork.

5. Go to the Troop Meeting at Noll Hall on June 24th at 7:00pm. During this Troop Meeting, we will discuss final preparations for Camp.

6. Round up the equipment you'll need for Summer Camp.

Check the equipment checklist ("What to Bring") in the Scout Camp Flyer. If there are things on that list that you don't have, now is the time to obtain them. If this is your first time to Camp and you're in doubt about equipment, ask a Scout Leader, or a Scout who's been to Camp.

New Scouts: In addition to the checklist, it is very important to bring extra clothes, and especially extra socks. You must Be Prepared for all kinds of weather; Summer Camp does not stop if the weather gets bad. Pack rain gear, and be equipped to keep important articles (like your uniform) clean and dry.

If you are looking for a good source for camping gear, Alps Mountaineering is a good place to start. Troop 397 is registered with Alps.

7. Prepare your gear for Camp.

Make sure you have everything on the equipment checklist in the flyer (see step 2). Get it securely packed and ready for the trip.

Remember: we arrive at Camp as Scouts, and we leave Camp as Scouts. Along with your equipment, ensure that your uniform is in good shape. You should be in uniform when we meet to leave for Camp. Represent your Troop with pride!

IMPORTANT: Campers must also bring a sack lunch for Sunday.

8. Prepare yourself for Camp!

Summer Camp is physically challenging. Do your best to prepare yourself to be up to that challenge. Your success and enjoyment at Camp depends on this preparation. Eat right, get plenty of sleep, and stay healthy before going to Camp.

See you there!
